Science points unlock the tech tree. This guide covers the fastest ways to farm science early, which biomes give the most return, and how to squeeze every last point out of each mission.
Science in KSP comes from running experiments in different situations and biomes. The same experiment gives different science depending on where you are (Kerbin surface vs. space vs. Mun), what biome you're in, and whether you've done it before. The multiplier drops each time you repeat it.
EVA Reports and Crew Reports are free science. Always take one on the launchpad, on the runway, in the upper atmosphere, in low space, and in high space. That's 5+ science from a single flight before you even leave Kerbin's SOI.
EARLY CAREER SCIENCE ROUTE
This route gives you 300โ400 science before you ever leave Kerbin:
1. On the launchpad: EVA Report + Crew Report + Mystery Goo + Thermometer
2. Launch to 18km (upper atmosphere): repeat all experiments โ different situation multiplier
3. Hit 70km (space near Kerbin): repeat again
4. Land in a different biome (Grasslands, Shores, Desert): repeat ground experiments
5. High Kerbin orbit (>250km): another set of space readings
Each biome on Kerbin's surface counts as a new experiment location. Flying over different biomes during a single suborbital hop can bank enormous science.
The Science Jr. (Materials Bay) and Mystery Goo containers cannot be reset without a Scientist Kerbal on EVA. Bring a scientist on your early missions, or bring multiple copies of the experiment โ one per biome.
MINMUS BEFORE THE MUN
Many experienced players go to Minmus before the Mun. Here's why:
โข Minmus has lower gravity (0.05g vs 0.17g) โ much easier to land and take off
โข Minmus has 9 biomes โ the Flats, Slopes, Lowlands, Highlands, etc. โ each worth a full set of science
โข A single Minmus mission can yield 1,000+ science points with the right instruments
โข The delta-v cost is similar to a Mun mission but the landing is far more forgiving
Bring a Science Jr., Mystery Goo, Thermometer, Barometer (in space), and a Scientist for resets. Drive or hop between biomes on the surface.
Transmitting science via an antenna gives you a fraction of the full value (typically 20โ40%). Returning the physical experiment to Kerbin gives 100%. For high-value experiments, always try to recover them.
PRIORITY TECH TREE UNLOCKS
With your early science, unlock in this order for the smoothest career progression:
1. Basic Rocketry โ survivability (parachutes!)
2. General Rocketry (LV-T30 engine)
3. Stability (better SAS)
4. Aviation (if you want planes) or Advanced Rocketry (for bigger engines)
5. Fuel Systems (decouplers, fuel lines)
6. Science Tech (Science Jr., OKTO probe core for uncrewed missions)
Don't spread science across the tree early. Focus on the rocketry column and survivability first.
