Privacy Policy
FreeRangeGamers (“we”, “our”, “us”) is committed to handling your personal information responsibly. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we may share it with, and your rights under applicable law including the GDPR and CCPA.
1. Information We Collect
Account data — When you create an account, we collect your display name, email address, and a hashed version of your password. We never store your password in plain text. If you register or sign in using Google Sign-In, we receive your name, email address, and a Google account identifier from Google; no password is stored for those accounts.
Usage data — We use Umami, a self-hosted, open-source analytics tool, to understand how visitors use the site. Umami is cookie-free, collects no personally identifiable information, and all data is stored exclusively on our own infrastructure — it is never shared with any third party. No third-party analytics services such as Google Analytics are used.
Cookies — We use a secure, HttpOnly session cookie to keep you logged in. We also use cookies set by Google AdSense to serve relevant advertisements (see Section 5). You can manage your cookie preferences at any time using the cookie consent banner on our site.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To operate and maintain your account
- To authenticate you when you sign in
- To communicate with you about your account (e.g., security notices)
- To improve and develop the platform
- To display advertisements that help fund the free service
3. Sharing Your Information
We may share your personal information with third-party service providers and partners in the course of operating, improving, or growing the platform, as well as in connection with business transactions, legal obligations, or other lawful purposes. Third parties we currently work with include:
- DigitalOcean — our database and hosting provider. Your account data is stored on DigitalOcean-managed PostgreSQL infrastructure under strict confidentiality obligations.
- DigitalOcean Spaces — object storage used to host user-uploaded files (such as profile images and guide assets). Files you upload are stored on DigitalOcean infrastructure.
- Resend — our transactional email provider. When we send you account-related emails (registration confirmation, password reset, weekly digest), your email address is processed by Resend. Their privacy policy is at resend.com/legal/privacy-policy.
- Google Sign-In — If you choose to register or sign in using Google Sign-In, your name, email address, and a Google account identifier are exchanged between Google and our platform to authenticate you. Google's Privacy Policy governs Google's handling of that data.
- Google reCAPTCHA — We use Google reCAPTCHA v3 on our registration and sign-in forms to protect against automated abuse. reCAPTCHA may collect hardware and software information, browser data, and behavioural signals and transmit them to Google for analysis. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.
- Google AdSense — We use Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google may use cookies and device identifiers to serve personalised ads based on your browsing activity. You can opt out at adssettings.google.com.
4. Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored on managed cloud infrastructure (DigitalOcean) with encrypted connections. Passwords are hashed using bcrypt before storage. No system is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
5. Advertising & Cookies
We use Google AdSense to display advertisements on parts of the site. Google AdSense uses cookies (including the __gads cookie) to serve ads that may be personalised based on your past visits to this and other websites. This constitutes the use of third-party advertising cookies.
We also use Google reCAPTCHA v3 for security purposes. reCAPTCHA sets cookies as part of its bot-detection analysis. These are security cookies, not advertising cookies, and are used solely to verify that form submissions are made by a human.
Your choices:
- Use our cookie consent banner to accept or decline advertising cookies.
- Visit Your Online Choices (EEA) or AboutAds.info (US) to opt out of interest-based advertising.
- Manage Google's ad personalisation at adssettings.google.com.
If you decline advertising cookies, you will still see ads but they will not be personalised. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.
6. Your Rights
- Access — You may request a copy of the data we hold about you.
- Correction — You may ask us to correct inaccurate information.
- Deletion — You may delete your account and associated data at any time via Settings → Delete Account. You may also email us to request manual deletion.
- Objection / Restriction — You may object to or ask us to restrict certain processing of your data.
- Data portability — You may request your data in a machine-readable format.
- Withdraw consent — You may withdraw cookie consent at any time via the cookie banner.
To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@freerangegamers.com. EEA/UK residents may also lodge a complaint with their local supervisory authority.
7. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
California residents have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion, and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information where applicable. To submit a CCPA request or exercise your opt-out rights, contact privacy@freerangegamers.com.
8. Children's Privacy
FreeRangeGamers is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Users between 13 and 18 require parental consent to register. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us immediately.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes via email or a prominent notice on the platform. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects when the policy last changed.
