OSRS F2P Money Making Guide for New Players (0 to 1M GP)

The realistic F2P money makers a brand-new account can actually do — starting from your first 1,000 gp all the way to your first million. No skill requirements above level 40, no gear required.

The GP Ladder

Every F2P money method has a GP/hour and a level requirement. As a beginner, you're level 1 at everything and have zero starter cash — so you need methods that:

1. Require no cash to start.

2. Scale with the skill level you gain while doing them.

3. Don't rely on Members-only content.

This guide walks you up the ladder. Do each tier until you have enough GP to skip to the next.

💡 Tip

All prices in this guide fluctuate. Grand Exchange prices move constantly. Check the OSRS Wiki (oldschool.runescape.wiki) live price pages before committing to a long grind. Numbers below are rough as of late-2024 F2P prices.

Tier 1: 0 → 10,000 gp (First Hour)

Method: Complete beginner quests.

Do these five quests in Lumbridge/Varrock/Draynor. Total time: ~1 hour. Total reward: ~2–3k gp plus starter items you can sell.

| Quest | GP Reward | Extras |

|-------|-----------|--------|

| Cook's Assistant | 0 | 300 Cooking XP |

| Sheep Shearer | 60 | Ball of wool ×20 |

| Restless Ghost | 0 | 1,125 Prayer XP |

| Doric's Quest | 180 | Mining XP, pickaxes access |

| Prince Ali Rescue | 700 | 3 Quest points |

| Goblin Diplomacy | 0 | Multiple skill XP |

Sell wool at the GE (~50 gp each), sell any starter iron ore you mine (~100 gp each).

Tier 2: 10k → 50k gp (Iron Ore Mining)

Method: Mine iron ore at the Al-Kharid mine.

  • Requirement: Level 15 Mining (train on tin/copper first — takes 15 minutes).
  • Location: Al-Kharid mine, south-east of Al-Kharid bank.
  • GP/hour: ~40–60k
  • XP/hour: ~20–30k Mining XP at low levels.

The Al-Kharid mine has ~11 iron rocks in a tight cluster and a bank ~1 minute walk away. Mine a full 27 (leave 1 for pickaxe), run to the bank, deposit, run back. Repeat.

Iron ore sells for ~100–150 gp on the GE. In one hour of banking runs you'll pull ~400 ores = 50k gp + a big Mining level bump.

Bonus: At level 30 Smithing (unlocked from mining iron and smelting), you can smelt steel bars — but smelting is often loss-making for beginners. Sell the raw ore.

💡 Tip

Buy a rune pickaxe. Even with only level 21 Attack (the wield requirement), a rune pickaxe (~20k gp) mines 15% faster than iron. You break even on the upgrade in ~2 hours. Steel pickaxe is fine if you can't afford rune yet — never mine with bronze past the tutorial.

Tier 3: 50k → 250k gp (Willow Logs)

Method: Chop willow logs at Draynor Village.

  • Requirement: Level 30 Woodcutting.
  • Location: Willow trees south of Draynor Village bank, right next to the river.
  • GP/hour: ~60–90k
  • XP/hour: ~40k Woodcutting XP.

Draynor bank is ~5 tiles from the willow trees — one of the most convenient bank-to-tree distances in the game.

Why willows? Logs are constant demand for Firemaking training and Fletching (Members). Prices fluctuate between 15–50 gp per log but the sell volume is enormous.

Alternative at level 35: Yew logs at Edgeville sell for ~200–400 gp each — slower to chop but higher GP/hour once you have level 60+ Woodcutting.

Tier 4: 250k → 1M gp (Air Runes)

Method: Craft air runes at the Air Altar.

  • Requirement: Level 1 Runecrafting (available immediately after completing Rune Mysteries in Varrock).
  • Location: Air Altar, west of Falador. Use rune essence bought from the GE (~10 gp each).
  • GP/hour: ~40k at low levels, up to ~150k gp/hour at level 44 (double runes).

Each essence you craft into an air rune sells for ~4–5 gp. The gross margin is thin but the volume is enormous, and Runecrafting is the slowest skill in the game — every XP is precious.

Pattern: Buy rune essence in bulk → withdraw 28 → run to Air Altar → craft → bank via Falador → repeat.

At level 44 Runecrafting you make 2 air runes per essence. GP/hour more than doubles.

💡 Tip

Runecrafting is a long-term investment. The Explorer's Ring (from the Lumbridge Achievement Diary — Members required for the harder diaries) gives free teleports to the Falador cabbage patch, right next to the Air Altar. If you plan to stick with OSRS, Runecrafting XP compounds into millions of GP over months.

Bonus: Passive Money

Grand Exchange flipping — Buy an item at a low bid, sell at a higher offer. F2P flipping works on rune equipment, dragonhide (P2P but has F2P demand), and planks. Minimum starting bankroll: ~50k gp.

Skill-based flipping (safe):

1. Buy 1,000 iron ore at 100 gp = 100k gp.

2. Wait 24 hours, resell at 110 gp = 110k gp.

3. Net: 10k gp for zero effort.

Repeat with any high-volume item. Never spend more than you're willing to lose — the GE fluctuates, and Jagex updates can crash prices overnight.

Bonds & Membership

Once you hit ~17M gp (currently the bond price), you can buy a bond on the GE and redeem it for 14 days of Members. This is the standard F2P → P2P transition path.

Realistic timeline to first bond as a new F2P account: 40–80 hours of dedicated play.

Faster: Combine methods. Mine iron while you afk-train Cooking on trout. Chop willows while you passively level Firemaking on the previous day's logs. Don't train just one skill for the whole session — you'll burn out.

💡 Tip

Never buy gold from third-party sites. Real-World Trading (RWT) is the #1 bannable offence in OSRS and Jagex actively hunts buyers, not just sellers. A permanent ban wipes your account. Buy bonds on the GE if you want to convert real money to in-game gold — that's the only legit path.
