RDR2 Story Arc Guide: Saint Denis and the Great Bank Heist (Chapter 4)
The gang moves its ambitions to Saint Denis — RDR2's sprawling city. This guide covers the Angelo Bronte affair, the riverboat heist, and the climactic bank robbery that ends Chapter 4 in catastrophe. Full walkthroughs and gold medal requirements.
Xbox button notation is used throughout this guide: LT/RT (triggers), LB/RB (bumpers), LS/RS (stick clicks), A/B/X/Y (face buttons). PC players using a controller will see these same prompts in-game. Keyboard/mouse players: check Settings → Key Bindings for your equivalents.
The City of Saint Denis
Saint Denis is RDR2's version of New Orleans — a dense, vibrant city of wealth and corruption sitting on the edge of the Lemoyne bayou. Chapter 4 is set largely here, and it's a different experience from the open frontier. The streets are narrow, lawmen are everywhere, and the money is enormous.
The main story missions of Chapter 4:
- The Gilded Cage (the Saint Denis party)
- Urban Pleasures (meeting Angelo Bronte)
- Country Pursuits (the Bronte gunboat)
- A Fine Night of Debauchery (the riverboat)
- Banking, the Old American Art (the bank robbery — Chapter 4's finale)
There are also important side missions here: the Italian family quest, the art theft arc (Hosea), and several stranger encounters worth completing before the story moves on.
The Gilded Cage + Urban Pleasures — Meeting Angelo Bronte
The Gilded Cage takes Arthur and Dutch to a lavish Saint Denis party hosted by the city's elite. It's a slower, more social mission focused on reconnaissance and maintaining cover.
- Dress appropriately before this mission — your cleanest outfit (change at a hotel wardrobe) affects how guards treat you
- Speak to the contacts Dutch points out; each gives a lead on Bronte
- Don't get spotted snooping — stay in the crowd and use the prompts to be discreet
Urban Pleasures is the proper introduction to Angelo Bronte, the crime lord who runs Saint Denis. Dutch wants to work with him; Bronte condescends. The mission ends with an understanding — you'll do a job for Bronte in return for his help.
Gold Medal (Urban Pleasures): Complete within 14 minutes and achieve 70% accuracy. The combat section at the Saint Denis cemetery is the key — take cover immediately and be surgical with shots.
Country Pursuits — Dealing with Bronte's Gunboat
To prove themselves to Bronte, the gang needs to eliminate a rival operation: a gunboat patrolling the bayou.
- Approach from the banks of the Bayou Nwa — the boat patrols a fixed route
- Dynamite thrown at the boat's hull works immediately; three sticks in quick succession sinks it
- Alternatively, target the boiler at the stern with rifle fire — two or three well-placed shots will cause an explosion
- Enemies in the water after sinking the boat can be ignored (they'll drown or flee)
Gold Medal: Sink the boat within 1 minute 30 seconds of arriving. Dynamite is by far the fastest method — stock up at the fence or general store beforehand. Don't waste time on individual enemies; go straight for the boat.
Explore Saint Denis thoroughly during Chapter 4 — it's at its most alive before the story's events change it. Find the tailor on the east side for unique outfits, the gunsmith for Saint Denis-exclusive weapon engravings, and the trolley system (ride it once for an achievement). The city has a dense cluster of stranger missions too — the serial killer's victims, the séance, the grave robber — most only triggerable during Chapters 4 and 5.
A Fine Night of Debauchery — The Riverboat Heist
Trelawny has a lead: a riverboat called the Grand Korrigan runs a high-stakes poker game carrying enormous cash. The gang will rob it.
Phase 1 — Infiltration: Arthur poses as a wealthy gambler. Dress smartly, keep a low profile, and play the poker mini-game. You don't need to win — just don't get caught cheating (follow the card-marking prompts exactly).
Phase 2 — The job: When Dutch signals, it all kicks off. The boat has multiple decks; the money is in the safe on the lower level. Fight your way down, crack the safe (or blast it with dynamite), and collect the take.
Phase 3 — The escape: Jump from the riverboat into the bayou below and swim to the marked shore. Enemies on the upper deck will fire down — dive underwater to break line of sight.
Gold Medal: Win the poker hand, kill 3 enemies with melee, complete without dying. The poker hand win means you can't bluff out of the card marking — you need to win legitimately (or use Dead Eye to mark cards perfectly). Melee kills are easiest during the initial chaos when enemies are close.
Banking, the Old American Art — The Saint Denis Bank Robbery
This is the Chapter 4 finale and one of the game's most dramatic missions. The gang robs the Lemoyne National Bank — a heavily guarded vault in the heart of Saint Denis.
Phase 1 — Entry: The gang enters in disguise with a hostage plan. Stay calm, keep your weapon holstered until Dutch gives the signal.
Phase 2 — The vault: Hosea creates a distraction outside while the team works the vault. The combination is found on the bank manager's person — search him carefully. While the vault drills, Pinkertons arrive.
Phase 3 — The firefight: This is a relentless, prolonged gunfight through Saint Denis's streets and alleyways. The city's layout funnels Pinkertons from multiple directions — use the buildings' interiors for cover.
Phase 4 — The sewers: The gang escapes through the city's sewer system. It's dark and disorienting — follow your gang members closely. Enemies block the exit route in force.
Gold Medal: Get 20 kills, achieve 70% accuracy, complete without dying. The sewer fight is the hardest section for accuracy — it's cramped and enemies move unpredictably. Slow everything down with Dead Eye.
Note: The ending of this mission triggers significant story events. Don't skip the cutscenes.
