Xbox button notation is used throughout this guide: LT/RT (triggers), LB/RB (bumpers), LS/RS (stick clicks), A/B/X/Y (face buttons). PC players using a controller will see these same prompts in-game. Keyboard/mouse players: check Settings → Key Bindings for your equivalents.

A New Camp, A New Start

Horseshoe Overlook is a beautiful hilltop camp overlooking the Flat Iron Lake. Chapter 2 is where the game truly opens up — you can wander freely, take on side missions, and explore the enormous map. But there's plenty of story to follow too.

Before doing anything else: visit your camp and talk to everyone. Dutch, Hosea, Pearson, Cripps — all of them have something to say. Donate money to the Tithing Box (even a small amount) and you'll start unlocking camp upgrades. The ledger near Dutch's tent lets you buy things like better medical supplies and ammunition for the whole gang.

Key early missions in this arc:

  • Polite Society, Valentine Style (Tilly/Karen/Mary-Beth intro)
  • Who is Leviticus Cornwall? (Dutch's follow-up)
  • Money Lending and Other Sins I & II (Strauss debt collecting)
  • A Quiet Time (drunk night with Lenny)
  • Blessed are the Meek? (bail out Micah)
  • The First Shall Be Last (rescue Sean)

Polite Society, Valentine Style

This mission introduces you to Valentine — a rough-and-tumble frontier town that becomes your main hub in Chapter 2. You escort Karen, Mary-Beth, and Tilly into town to get supplies while the ladies scope out the local saloon.

The mission is mostly narrative, but Valentine deserves exploration after it's done:

  • The Doctor (next to the saloon) sells tonics and medicine
  • The Gunsmith has your first upgrades — prioritize off-hand holster to dual-wield
  • The Stable has decent early horses for purchase
  • The Saloon is where you'll play poker and hear story gossip

Gold Medal: Complete within 10 minutes and don't get spotted during the card marking sequence. Stay crouch-walked and use the prompts carefully.

Money Lending and Other Sins I & II

Leopold Strauss sends you to collect debts from struggling settlers. These missions are morally uncomfortable by design — that's the point. Pay attention to how Arthur feels about this work; it develops his character arc.

Debt 1 (Cosgrove Farm): Thomas Downes is sick and clearly can't pay. You can be lenient or brutal. This choice has minor story consequences later. High Honor players should be gentle.

Debt 2 (Emerald Ranch): Chick Matthews at the ranch is more straightforward — he has the money but plays hardball. Lasso him if he runs.

Debt 3 (Flatneck Station): The Londonderry family. Another difficult one morally.

Gold Medal: Complete without dying. These missions are low-combat, so this mainly means not getting shot during any altercations. Use Dead Eye if things get hairy.

💡 Tip

Don't ignore Strauss missions even if they feel unpleasant. Beyond the story significance, each debt collection gives you a cut of the money. It's steady income early when cash is tight, and completing them all unlocks a small story beat with Strauss that's worth seeing. You can always donate the money to camp afterward to ease any guilt.

A Quiet Time — Getting Drunk with Lenny

One of RDR2's most beloved missions. Arthur and Lenny hit the Valentine saloon and things get out of hand fast. The gameplay here is mostly humorous button-mashing mini-games, but there are a few things to know:

  • Keep calling out "LENNY!" when prompted — it's important for the scene to play out correctly
  • The brawl at the end requires quick reactions; the prompts are forgiving
  • Don't miss the stranger in the pink hat at the bar — interacting with him before the chaos starts adds a funny extra scene

Gold Medal: Complete within 16 minutes and don't pass out more than once. Pace yourself during the drinking mini-game (the bar that fills up) — let it stop just short of the maximum each round.

Blessed are the Meek? — Bailing Out Micah

Micah Bell got himself arrested in Strawberry after a bar fight. Dutch sends Arthur to get him out — alone. Strawberry is a lawful town far south of camp, and busting someone out of jail here is not subtle.

  • Approach Strawberry from the east road to avoid immediate suspicion
  • Interact with the Sheriff's office; you can try to bribe first (costs money) or go loud
  • Going loud triggers a significant gunfight through Strawberry's streets — you'll need to shoot your way out and escape the bounty zone

Gold Medal: Get 5 headshots and complete without dying. The street escape is the dangerous part — use Dead Eye liberally and hug cover.

The First Shall Be Last — Rescuing Sean MacGuire

The gang discovers Sean (captured after Blackwater) is being held by bounty hunters near Flat Neck Station. This is one of Chapter 2's most action-heavy missions.

Phase 1 — The river ambush: You approach from the water. Use Eagle Eye to spot guard positions before moving. Silently take out the two lookouts closest to the waterline using your bow — this prevents the alert phase.

Phase 2 — The camp assault: Once Sean is found, it turns into a full firefight. The bounty hunters have good positioning on the rocks; flank left with Javier rather than charging straight up.

Phase 3 — The escape: Ride hard south. Enemies chase on horseback — use Dead Eye to shoot pursuers while riding (hold LT, then aim).

Gold Medal: Kill 4 enemies with a bow, get 5 headshots, and complete without dying. The bow kills are easiest in Phase 1 before the alarm; the headshots come naturally during Phase 2 with Dead Eye active.
